You Are Ethereal

This is a message to anyone who has ever struggled, with anything: You’ll be okay. Sit back and remember; Allah loves you, a lot. You were born with a fate written for you, and you know that. You are alive, you are breathing. Your heart is beating against your ribcage, your cells are quivering, your blood cells fighting and rushing to deliver oxygen to every part of you. Your brain pulses with emotion, with thought, and with chemicals. And your body is fighting to keep you alive with every...

Medicine for the Soul: Part I

Somehow, I make it over to the window on the other side of my small dormitory room and push the door open. I am sweating. My heart is pounding. My strength fails me and my body suddenly has no sense of stability. Down, deep down, I fall into a crumpled heap. I stare at the ceiling fan as it rotates endlessly. My mind is spinning, aching, and throbbing. The breeze drifts in through the open window, playing with the curtains and mingling with the sweat on my forehead. My...

A Soul’s Showpiece

It stood gracefully on a shelf of an antique wooden cabinet – a showpiece in the shape of a heart bordered with Swarovski diamonds. Its many edges, cut with the utmost precision, gave it an additional dazzling shine that captured the eyes of visitors.  Even though it was just another piece picked out of many from a crystal gallery, it had an air of superiority among the other artifacts that it was placed with. Its new surrounding was rather too rusty for a heavenly thing like it to reside....

With A Soul, I Fly

The following piece, “With a Soul, I Fly” by Hibbah Haddam, was chosen from a selection of submissions for Expressions: Sisters’ Open Mic, an event at George Mason University sponsored by Muslim Youth Musings. On November 28th, participants were given the opportunity to share poetry, perform spoken word in front of an audience, and compete for a chance to be published on MYM. A group of seven talented young female poets and spoken word artists rose to the challenge, exuding inspiration with powerful imagery, clever satire, smooth rhymes, and...

Queen, Jacks, Hearts, and Spades

Queen, Jacks, Hearts, and Spades, My personality fades, In a world where exploitation is the exposition for every living respiration. A world where in desperation, no man does speak his self truths, A world where one wrong move could make you lose this competition, Fame and fortune is the only designation. And as I still walk down those school hallways From personal experience one of these days It’s not the clothes I wear, It may be my act. Or maybe what I wear on my head The fact that...

Colors of the Wind

Become one with the earth. Lay upon the dirt from which you came. Sinking, melting, Streaming down the crevices Cracks, slipping further. We return to the earth, don’t we? Go, return to your Lord. Creator. Guardian. Let the sun wash over your skin. Bask in the beams of mercy, A gift from your Lord Calling to you Pray Beg Bathe in the sheets of noor Filling every pore, hole, void, With longing To glide along the bridges threading from sky to earth. Crystal droplets, dancing Sloshing, swishing Flowing down...

Crimson Drenched Eyes

Another tear rolls down my cheek, I feel it meandering its way down, Joining the others to form a stream. I slowly close my crimson drenched eyes, Feeling the shatter inside my chest; The vessel has finally begun to leak. ‘In life you will meet all kinds of people’ I hear my father’s words ringing in my ears. But no matter how prepared you think you are, It will never be enough for this kind of betrayal. Treated appallingly in more ways than one, Their selfishness has made me...
